Program Mission Statement:

To ensure that the Underground Storage Tanks operating facilities that store and dispense petroleum comply with Navajo Nation Underground Storage Tank ACT 1998 and the Federal Underground Storage Tank regulatory requirements in 40 Code of Federal Regulations Part 280, and the Resource Concervation and Recovery ACT, as amended.

Vision statement: With respect to Diné sovereign values, we envision Navajo Nation EPA, as a competent, efficient, sustainable environmental agency, which is committed to protecting Diné Health and the environment through utilizing partnerships, outreach, technology, restoration, waste regulatory compliance, enforcement, local presence, and modern environmental laboratory center.

Regulated Community:

The Navajo Nation EPA UST/Leaking UST Program inspects 133 operating UST facilities that include tribal, county, state, and federal facilities, hopitals, coalmines, power plants, educational, and small businesses.

What is an Underground Storage Tank?

Any one and/or combination of tanks (including underground pipers connected thereto, which is used to contain an accumulation of regulated substance, and the volume of which (including the volume of the underground pipes connected thereto) is 10% or more beneath the surface of the ground.

If the UST's are not in compliance or upgraded, the tanks may leak into the ground water, surface water or surface or subsurface soil causing harm to the public health and safety of the people and the environment.
